Every young adult goes through struggles throughout their lives whether it may be choosing what "cool" rowd to join, which sports team to try out for, or even something as simple as choosing which kind of apparel is "in." What these choices reflect is conformity. However, what about the teenagers who don't conform, who don't choose to follow the masses? Five short stories from the anthology Outside Rules outline young adults' who practice nonconformity in their lives through various conflicts and situations they encounter. All five authors aim to write to a young adult audience encouraging nonconformity, which in turn, develops self-identity and individualism.
"Saint Chola" -K. Kvashay-Boyle Boyle tells the story of a young Muslim female named Shala who is constantly being bullied at her school because of her religion, and more specifically, the head scarf she wears. Although Shala feels out of place at times, she stays true to her religion refusing to remove her scarf. Another character, again, demonstrating nonconformity.
"Laughing in the Dark" -Rand Richards Cooper Cooper's short story focuses on on protagonist, Danny, who is coping with the fact his sister has ran away from home when he was four years old, and hasn't returned since. At the beginning of the story, Danny is experiencing extreme depression and feelings of hopelessness. However, once he is paired up with the outspoken, punk-rocker, Angela his whole life changes. Angela helps Danny to experience happiness, self-confidence, self-identity, and individualism.
"Nobody Listens When I Talk" -Annette SanfordSanford's story focuses on Marilyn, a very timid girl who doesn't feel comfortable speaking to anyone because most people don't even care to listen to her. Although Marilyn doesn't ever get the courage to voice her opinion, Sanford writes this story to encourage young adults to be the opposite and make their voices heard.
"Playing in the Garden" -Chris FisherThis story focuses on an eighteen-year-old named Kevin and his departure to college and the choices he makes as he arrives. Kevin has a talent for hockey, a sport which his father has always encouraged him to play; however, once Kevin goes away to school he decides to quit. Although Kevin's father is discouraged and angry about his decision, Kevin engages in the activities he desires to.

This story focuses on Angie who is living in a group home among individuals who suffer from mental illnesses; however, her mental diagnosis is much less serious than anyone she lives with. Before Angie was diagnosed, she lived a very normal life a teenage girl would but now has a completely different lifestyle. Although she lives in this home, Angie seems to be the outsider because she demonstrates individualism.
